Dos and Don'ts in Mandalay

  1. Mandalay is crowded with motorbikes so it will be better not to ride your own bike.

  2. I would suggest you change Myanmar currency so it will be easier to purchase snacks or taxi fares.

  3. You cannot wear any footwear and shorts when you go to the pagoda or religious buildings.

  4. You should be aware of body language.

    • When you sit, you shouldn’t sit with your feet pointing at the pagoda or elder people.
    • In Myanmar, they normally greet by bowing and saying “Mingalarbar”. It is OK to handshake with men but you will need to ask for the permission with ladies.
    • Myanmar people don’t like when you touch their head or point at them

  5. I would suggest you ask for permission when you want to take a photo.

  6. You shouldn’t go to restricted areas without permission.

  7. In Yangon, motorbikes are not allowed and bicycles are not allowed in downtown areas.

  8. If you come to Myanmar with your girlfriend, you need to know that Myanmar people don’t think kissing in public is acceptable.

  9. Some Myanmar street foods are too oily or some are spicy that can cause stomachache.

Mandalay Transportation

By flight

You will reach Mandalay Airport and it will take around 50 min (40km) to downtown. You can get airport transfer that will cost around $20 for 2 pax.

By Bus

There are two main bus stations in Mandalay. Chan-Mya-Shwe-Pyi Bus station is the main one which is 4.2 km(12 min drive) from downtown. Another bus station is Pyi-Gyi-Myat-Shin, it is for the buses to His-paw, Lashio.

By Train

I won't recommend train for this trip because there is no direct train from Nyaung Shwe to Mandalay. The train will stop at Thazi and then you will continue to the Mandalay central railway station which is 2.4 km(7 min drive) from downtown.
